Had the chance to take a few days and do something I haven’t done in over 10 years , take a multi day hike on a The Appalachian Trail . So me and two friends threw our packs in the back of a pick up truck and off to the Smoky Mountains for a three day Hike. I checked my ETSY shop one last time before I turned the computer off, an order had just come in, well nothing for it. Will and Donnie waiting in the truck I will send them a note when I get back and let them know it will be a little late. I made sure there was no birthday or wedding deadline, I get those occasionally.
The view from Clingmans Dome was magnificent and the hike to the first shelter was on, and I realized as I walked, long over due. We hiked together talking and taking pictures for a while. but I learned a time ago you hike at your own pace if possible and do not try to match somebody’e else s pace be it faster or slower. So Will being younger was faster, Donnie is almost my age but a little slower so that left me in the middle with long stretches of solitude. So here I am hiking the Appalachian Trail on a beautiful summer day singing the Beatles When I’am 64 , because I am 64, but I could not remember all the words like the grands kids names, because I am 64. So for three days I left my cares down in the low lands breathed clean air, drank water from mountain streams, slept under the stars, and hung out with two good friends. I talked to people I met along the trail, some like us out for a few days, day hikers, and some long distance Hikers ( The thru hikers had already passed through where we were months ago.) and met my first Ridgerunner, A young woman who works for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and who had thru hiked the trail several years ago, Showed me how the cables worked shared a little about her thru hike and made the lunch stop at Double Spring Gap a whole lot cooler. 20 miles and two nights later back in the truck and heading home.
Back home the first thing is to custom print the clock face for that last order. The big Epson printer didn’t get to go a vacation so it decided to throw a hissy fit but I got it printed anyway. I then sent the customer a short note apologizing for the delay in contacting them but that I had been out of town and that there new clock had been printed and would ship as soon as possible. The next morning I had a short note from thanking me for getting back to them.
A few days later as I am putting the last of my camping gear away and marveling that I have no new pains or blisters and seem none the worse for wear and lost only a pair of sunglasses and a few pounds. As I check my shop I find that the customer from West Virginia whose clock was a little late as posted the best review I have ever received. I some times need to be reminded to be grateful, a great hike in beautiful weather, and healthy enough still to do that, good friends, a great review for one of products and most important of all, I got sing “when I’am 64 ” on the Appalachian Trail which was my major goal for this year. and no one heard my off key singing ,How cool is that
